School Improvement Priorities

SRI - focus on meeting the needs of all students in order to promote student learning and wellbeing.

I have been working closely with the Year 6 leaders of Community and Wellbeing and through this the students indicated that they would like to see a return to passive play activities. Together we drafted a roster for the leaders to facilitate passive play with each of the classes. The leaders audited the equipment available and planned out what equipment would suit each of the Years. On Monday, Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 were very excited to have the opportunity to start using the equipment. We had to remember that these students had either no or limited previous opportunities for passive play. We had cars, blocks, giant dominos, dolls, lego, duplo and tea sets to play with. Wednesday saw Years 3, 4 and 5 very eagerly use the equipment too. There were some intense chess duals happening, lego architects and racing car drivers all having the best time. Mrs Hughes even was caught catching some passive play action!

Not all students enjoy the hustle and bustle of a busy playground. This can cause anxiety in some of our students. Passive play is giving students alternatives to the usual ball games and in turn lowers anxiety and incidents of poor behavioural choices. We look forward to the continuation of passive play activities and having choices of other playground equipment.
