Message from the Principal

Dear Parents,

As my time draws to an end at St Michael's I would like to thank you for your warm welcome and support. As an educator for over 40 years and a Principal in many schools parents often ask me for advice on assisting their children in being resilient, strong and happy. It is essential that children face and overcome challenges and are able to celebrate with "I did" moments. Sadly, this moment of joyful triumph is increasingly taken away from children with too much adult intervention.
One of the serious risks children face is that adults are depriving them of the opportunity to develop resilience – that ability to cope with setbacks which are part of life. Children who lack resilience are often anxious and  scared to try new experiences.

Children who are physical risk takers in the outdoors are also risk takers in the classroom and in life. They have the confidence and the risk-taking disposition to have a go at new experiences, at attempting a challenging math problem, reading a difficult book, doing a science experiment and having a go.

"Michael Carr-Gregg told Mamamia. “Parents have forgotten how to say ‘no’ and are excessively hesitant to set limits or boundaries.”Carr-Gregg has recognised “an overwhelming imperative to be their best friend and that of course is ridiculous”. As a parent, it is the job of a good parent to be the “frontal cortex of your child” while their brain develops, he says. As a parent and now a new grandparent over the years I have come to realise the importance of setting rules and boundaries this helps a child understand and be resilient to live in the real world. I smile when I hear my daughter say 'no' to my grandson knowing, that in not always getting what he wants, will help him be a strong empathetic individual.
Please keep in your prayers our Year 6 students who were confirmed this week, may the spirit of the Lord fill them with love, courage and hope.
On your behalf I thank all our teaching staff for all the hard work they have put into report writing and preparing for interviews next week. We should be very proud of our amazing staff and school.
Thanks for the ride St Michael's
Many Blessing
Cheryle Brennan
