The beating heart of St Michael’s
Over the past two years we have sharpened our focus on animating our beautiful vision statement. As I shared at our Opening School Mass, I want St Michael’s to be more than just a school focussed on excellence in learning. I aspire for it to be a place that works in partnership with parents to shape beautiful human beings that ultimately are empowered to become the best version of themselves. The most enjoyable part of my role is being in the classrooms and on the playground to connect with our students and be inspired by their daily words and actions. It gives me a great sense of pride to witness the love, connection, and respect displayed by our wonderful students and staff. Please see below some beautiful moments of kindness that I was fortunate to witness over the past fortnight:
- Year 5 buddies: providing guidance, support, and even cuddles for our new Kindergarten students during our opening school Mass. Their kindness and patience was truly inspiring.
- Ciara M- for going out of her way to support a kindergarten student who was tired and needing some extra support.
- Mr Ryan during NAPLAN testing. This testing can create some worry and concern for our students. Prior to the test I witnessed Mr Ryan walking around the Year 5 classroom handing out personal messages on post it notes to every student. I watched as the students placed this message in a special place with a big smile on their face. When I asked how the post it note made them feel, they replied ‘valued and special.’
- Ayden D during our opening Mass and school assembly. Public speaking can be a daunting affair for many people (including me). I love nothing more than seeing someone take on their worries or fears head on. Ayden epitomises this courage, and did a tremendous job of not only reading at our opening school Mass, but also facilitating a large component of our school assembly. I walked away extremely proud and inspired.
- Jayden G and the whole school community. I was left inspired by the efforts of Jayden G during the Cross Country carnival. Jayden epitomises the St Michael’s spirit with his never give up attitude. I was left with goosebumps after witnessing the standing ovation from the whole community getting behind Jayden
I could spend all day listing the acts of kindness within our community. Like Christ, these students have inspired many others to work towards becoming the best version of themselves.
Parent consultative Group
In response to our Tell Them From Me survey, in 2025 we are introducing a new initiative to continue to deepen partnerships between school and home. Recently, I sought expression of interest for parents interested in becoming a part of our very first parent consultative group. The purpose of this group is to represent parent voices and work alongside the Principal and Assistant Principal in crafting new ideas, providing feedback, and communicating messages aligned to our school vision and strategic direction. On Tuesday 1 April we will be holding our very first meeting for the newly appointed parent representatives. I am very pleased that we have parents representing almost all grades and am very grateful for their commitment to support our beautiful school through this initiative. I’d like to thank the following parents for their commitment to this newly formed team in 2025:
Ed Shepherd (Year 1, Year 4, Year 5)
Victoria Deacon (Kindergarten, Year 2, Year 4)
Roxanne Journet (Year 2 and Year 4)
Karina Stuart-Street (Year 1 and Year 4)
Debbie Gillett (Kindergarten)
Melissa McEntee (Year 4)
Alexa Marciano (Kindergarten and Year 4)
Jo Pye (Year 6)

CEDoW Attendance policy
Zooming in on: school based attendance monitoring
In alignment with our new attendance policy, we have made some amendments to our attendance monitoring. We have organised an attendance team that consists of the following team members: Amy Sammut, Chelsea McLeod, Claire Ryan, and James Bryce. Each fortnight we will meet to review whole school attendance data and identify any emerging patterns or concerns. Please do not be alarmed if you receive a phone call from one of the team members regarding attendance. Our intention is to better understand the emerging attendance concern, and work alongside you to assist in improving the attendance of your child. Late departures or frequent days off may not appear to be a concern, but this can quickly add up and have a significant impact on the learning and wellbeing of the child.
Child development, early childhood intervention services, and disability support questionnaire
A NSW Parliament select committee has been established to inquire into and report on child development, early childhood intervention services, and other foundational and disability supports available for children and young people with developmental concerns, delays, differences, or disabilities in New South Wales.
Further information about the inquiry, including the terms of reference, can be found on the committee's website here.
As part of the inquiry, the committee is seeking online submissions from NSW residents through the following questions. Responses are due by Monday 31 March 2025.
Responses may be used in the committee's report. Names and contact details of respondents will not be published. The questionnaire will take approximately 5 minutes to complete.
Individual contributors can complete an online questionnaire.

Mr James Bryce - Principal
We have spent a considerable amount of time pulling apart our vision; Inspired by Christ, we aspire to excellence in learning, living fully in community. Yet, we must ask ourselves: How do we translate this vision into action through our mission? Our mission is to…
- Be a vibrant catholic community, where all feel safe, valued, loved and respected
- Display understanding, compassion, and care for others and all of creation
- Foster dynamic and diverse learning opportunities
To further strengthen our Catholic community, I recently invited our staff to participate in a CR_OSSFIT Lenten spiritual bootcamp. You will always be the first educators of your children but as Catholic teachers, it is important for us to also embrace our faith with two loving hands. This allows us to support you in guiding your children towards encountering Christ. Each week, I invite staff to reflect on a pertinent scripture passage and then to challenge themselves with tasks that align with catholic social teaching. You might consider participating in some of the challenges.
Last week’s focus: the poor and vulnerable
Last week’s challenge: Look up from your phone as you move around
- Notice someone on the edge of your community and engage in conversation
- Instead of following people with huge popularity, seek out those who are humble, deep and with integrity.
This week’s focus: Economic justice. We will use last week’s Gospel as inspiration and reflection
This week’s challenge:
- Complete an audit of your wardrobe, remove and gift unused items to charity
- Simplify a few meals/week and donate saved money to CARITAS
Next week’s focus: The common good. We will use the parable of the prodigal son as inspiration and reflection
Next week’s challenge:
- Start each day with the morning prayer: “Jesus, give me the inspiration and strength to contribute to the good of others today”
- Small acts of kindness (holding a door open, a smile, impeccable manners, words of encouragement)
- Volunteer for something that is charitable
Lent
A Lenten promise represents a unique bond between each of us and God. This season invites us to reflect on how we can embody this promise in our lives. Traditionally, we may think of Lent as a time to give up something we cherish, like lollies— this is what my grandmother, parents and at school taught me. However, a Lenten promise encompasses three key elements: prayer, fasting, and almsgiving.
Prayer: How have you embraced this season of deep reflection? Consider adding moments of quiet prayer or meditation into your daily routine.
Fasting: Fasting isn’t limited to abstaining from food we love; it can mean letting go of unkind words or negative thoughts. What have you chosen to fast from this Lent?
Almsgiving: This is a time to support those less fortunate. Reflect on the ways you have reached out to help others during this period.
Engaging with your children about your own Lenten promise could inspire them. Share your experiences: what you’ve fasted from, how you pray, and the ways you’ve contributed to those in need. Let this be a shared journey of faith and compassion.
CARITAS project compassion
Each class has slowly been adding to their own project compassion boxes. Project compassion is your almsgiving in action.
These are some examples of how the money that has been donated goes to help.
Leaia's story, Samoa
Not having access to a reliable source of clean water was very difficult for Leaia and her family. But with the support of Caritas Australia, a water tank was installed at their home, improving their health and living conditions.
Collectively as a school we have raised to date $128. We would love to see that grow.
Last week’s Gospel
Luke 13:1-9
“ … And I shall cultivate the ground around it and fertilize it.” … Metaphorically speaking, the cultivation and
fertilization could be grace in the parable. In the book Diary of a Country Priest, George Bernanos said, “Grace is everywhere.” What does that statement mean to you? Do you always cooperate with such grace? Could you
cooperate to a greater degree? How?
Do you give people another chance after they make a mistake? Why does Pope Francis give God the name, “the God of another possibility”?
But Jesus knows that conversion is not easy, and he wants to help us there. He knows that we often repeat the same mistakes and the same sins; that we become discouraged, and perhaps it may seem that our
commitment to do good is useless in a world where evil appears to rule. Thus, after his appeal, he encourages
us with a parable that tells of the patience of God. We must keep in mind God’s patience, the patience he
has for us. He offers the comforting image of a fig tree that does not bear fruit during the accorded season,
but is not cut down. More time is given to it, another possibility.
I like to think that a nice name for God could be “the God of another possibility” : God always gives us another opportunity, always, always. That is what his mercy is like. This is how the Lord is with us. He does not cut us out of his love. He does not lose heart or tire of offering us his trust again, with tenderness.
Brothers and sisters, God believes in us! God trusts us and accompanies us with patience, the patience of God with us.
– Pope Francis, Angelus of the Third Sunday of Lent, 20 March 2022
Opening school Mass- reflection
While it was a delayed start, our opening school Mass was such an expression of love and joy of our faith and community. It was especially lovely to have parents involved throughout the Mass. It was just as lovely to have our choir lead us in song along with the wonderful Carmel Leonard who gave up her precious time to assist them. Congratulations to our newest leaders of the school.

Feast day of St Joseph and St Patrick’s Liturgies
Year 5 led liturgies in each class to celebrate the feast day of St Joseph and Year 6 led liturgies to mark Saint Patrick.

Year 6 attended Mass for Ash Wednesday. The Inspired by Christ team were blessed and granted permission to share the ashes to our whole school community. Each class had their own intimate liturgy led by the Inspired by Christ team. It was very moving.
Last week, Year 1 had a great experience of baptism in our church. Fr Ken taught them about the whole ritual of baptism, even having parents, God parents and a baby to baptise.

St Patrick’s Day Year 6 Fundraiser
What a truly amazing celebration we had last Thursday for our annual St Patrick’s Day Year 6 graduation fundraiser. A huge thank you goes to our Year students for their leadership on the day with all the events and to the parents who supported the event with all the green, delicious treats. Overall we raised a total of $867.20 to go directly towards the costs associated with the year 6 graduation. Well done everyone. A big thank you also goes to the Ryan family aka Paddy McWoozy and Miss Jessica, the Rose of Tralee for supporting the Leprechaun photo booth on the day. Please enjoy some photos of this wonderful event.

Harmony Day
We celebrated cultural diversity and the fact that we believe ‘Everyone Belongs’ in our community. We celebrated what it means to be a part of a diverse community made up of different nationalities, cultures, languages and religions. To help us mark this special day, we wore orange mufti and welcomed Cultural Infusion - where we experienced Bollywood dancing, Aboriginal Dreamtime stories and dances and drumming from West Africa. We also got to sample Asian cuisine with a delicious fried rice lunch, served by our wonderful Inspired by Christ Year 6 leaders and to top off this wonderful event The HARMONISERS will be back on Friday at the assembly to perform a cultural song for you. All money raised on Harmony Day will be donated to Caritas Project Compassion to support underprivileged communities build water tanks and clean, safe toilets and deliver hygiene kits to Samoa and Vietnam. A big shout out goes to some Year 3 students who spent lunch time creating beaded bracelets, rings and necklaces to sell on Harmony Day, they raised over $40 to go towards project compassion.

Personalised Plan Meetings - Week 10.
Parents and carers of students with a diagnosed or imputed disability will have an opportunity to meet with teachers either in person or via telephone in Week 10 this term to discuss their learning and/or wellbeing goals and progress towards these. Conferences will be set up on Compass for parents to book in. There are normally 2 formal meetings per year for students on personalised plans, however CEDoW have informed schools that some students on lower levels of adjustment, will only require one formal meeting. Teachers will inform parents of whether they will have 1 or 2 formal PP meetings at the week 10 meeting. Parents are always welcome to book in a meeting with teachers throughout the year if they would like to discuss their child’s learning or wellbeing progress and there are the formal parent teacher interviews held in Term 2 and optional interviews in Term 4.
Kindergarten Home Reading Workshop
We would like to extend an invitation to all Kindergarten parents and carers to join Mrs Kelly and I to learn about how to best support your child with their home reading. We are offering 2 workshops where we will unpack the purpose of home reading, share some tips and tricks and some supportive instructional videos. These workshops will be held on:
- Monday 7 April at 9:00- 9:45 am

Gotcha4life update (mental fitness week reflection): Pam Cheetham
Last week, our school community came together to celebrate Mental Fitness Week. We hope you had the chance to rest, recharge, and spend quality time with your loved ones, just as we did. It was wonderful to see students participating in a variety of mental fitness activities that helped them reflect, regulate their emotions, and enhance their focus in meaningful ways.
Below is a snapshot of students engaging in Gotcha4Life mental fitness boosters like mindful colouring, the Circle of Control, and mindful finger mazes.
Ask your child about these activities – they’ll be able to explain what each one involves and how it helps them.
Mental fitness isn’t just for students, but for adults too. This week, our staff focused on their own mental fitness by checking in with each other over delicious 'Mental Fitness Melts' at lunch, enjoying healthy snacks, participating in mindful colouring, receiving massages, and going on morning walk and prayer together. These activities have helped us all refresh and fill our cups as we approach the end of the term.
Daily Check in Barometer
Last week, we also introduced the ‘Daily Check-In’ for all students. This initiative helps students recognize and express their emotions, while giving teachers insight into their emotional well-being. It ensures that every student starts their learning in a positive mindframe, with regular check-ins throughout the day as needed. It’s encouraging to see students using the chart and appropriate language to communicate how they’re feeling. This consistent approach and consistent language across classrooms and the playground is sure to have a positive impact.
It may also be helpful to use this image, language and number scale with your child at home when discussing their emotions.

Mrs Pam Cheetham - Middle Leader 1
Improving Writing update:
Community of Practice (CoPs)
I am excited to share some important developments aimed at improving how we assess and support your child's learning. In Week 7, our teachers took part in a professional learning twilight session with colleagues from other one-stream schools in Helensburgh, Port Kembla, and Gwynneville. This session was part of an exciting pilot project focused on enhancing assessment practices across schools in our diocese.
A key goal of this collaboration is to improve consistency in how students work, particularly writing, is assessed. Differences in applying assessment criteria can make it challenging to track student progress accurately. To address this, we are refining our moderation practices to ensure clearer, more consistent evaluations. This will help us plan more effective teaching strategies and better meet the diverse needs of all students.
Our teachers are working with Professor Jim Tognolini to deepen their understanding of modern assessment practices and will develop a shared grading scale later in the year. This will ensure consistent application of criteria and enable more personalised learning experiences to support each student’s growth.
Through ongoing collaboration in Communities of Practice (CoPs), teachers will share insights and strategies to refine assessment and improve student outcomes. This initiative aligns with our school’s annual improvement goal: Students will demonstrate appropriate learning growth in writing and can identify their next steps in learning.
Our next step is the Staff Development Day on Friday, 11th April, where teachers will further refine moderation practices using student writing samples across all 4 schools. This work will strengthen our assessment processes and enhance how we support your child’s learning journey.
We look forward to the positive impact this will have on all students.
STEM Enrichment Academy – Developing Future Innovators
This year, both Mr. David Ryan and I are participating in The STEM Enrichment Academy, with over 70 primary school teachers from all over NSW. This is an innovative year-long professional learning program designed to enhance teachers’ ability to collaboratively design integrated STEM curriculum for students.
As part of this initiative, Mr. Ryan has already begun implementing some Level One and Level Two STEM challenges into his classroom, engaging students in hands-on, problem-solving activities that encourage teamwork and critical thinking.
In these STEM challenges, students take on specific roles within their groups:
? Project Manager – Leads the team, monitors progress, manages the noise level, resolves conflicts, and is the only member allowed to ask the teacher questions.
? Team Reporter – Records data and submits the team’s final report.
? Supply Manager – Ensures the safe handling and use of all materials and equipment.
Level Two STEM challenge: Designing a Car for the 21st Century: Last week, our Year 5 students took on an exciting engineering challenge using the Engineering Framework to guide their thinking.
Their mission? To help C4 Solutions, an engineering company known for innovative problem-solving, explore eco-friendly transportation solutions for a future without petrol.
The Task - Students were challenged to design and build a car for the 21st century that:
✅ Is ultralight
✅ Travels on wheels
✅ Is powered by wind
✅ Can move at least 3 metres
Students worked collaboratively, applying STEM principles to design, test, and refine their prototypes. It was fantastic to see their creativity, problem-solving skills, and teamwork in action!
Here are some photos of the students creating their prototypes
Here is a clip of the amazing end results! See clip

Are you struggling with your child’s online behaviour or device time/use?
This is a common problem for many parents of school age children. It might be setting time limits, controls on the access to content and websites, addiction to gaming or social media. Here are some useful tips and tricks and advice from the e-safety commissioner to set up healthy expectations for your child when they use their device.
If you are struggling with the amount of device time your child is having, here is a useful guide to support you and your child.
